Buying footballs for schools and clubs

Buying footballs for a school, club or academy? Work through player numbers, sizes by age group, spares, pumps, bags, budget, delivery and payment, then request a bulk quote.

Buying one football takes a minute. Buying a set for a school sports department, a neighbourhood club or a coaching academy is a small project, and the usual mistakes only show up on the first day of training: the wrong size for the age group, too few balls to go round, or no pump. Work through this checklist before you spend anything.

1. Count players and sessions first

Write down every age group you coach, how many players are in each, and when each group trains. Then find the busiest overlap in your week. If the under-12s and under-14s share the ground on the same afternoon, you need enough balls for both groups at once.

One coaching education website urges coaches to give every player a ball of their own, so sessions are spent with the ball rolling rather than children queuing for a turn. As a rough cross-check, a UK coaching equipment supplier suggests around 10 to 15 balls for a school team, 15 to 20 for a grassroots club and 20 to 30 for an academy squad. Let your own head count decide, but if it lands well below those ranges, look again.

2. Match the ball size to each age group

Children play with smaller balls, and the size goes up as they grow. The cut-off points depend on which football body you ask:

England Football uses size 3 from under-7 to under-11, size 4 for under-12 and under-13, and size 5 from under-14 to under-16, when 11-a-side begins.
AYSO uses size 3 for its 6U and 8U divisions, size 4 for 10U and 12U, and size 5 from 14U to 18U.

Because the tables differ, ask your league, district tournament or inter-school competition which size it plays with before you order. For older teams, Law 2 of the IFAB Laws of the Game describes the full-size ball: a circumference of 68 to 70 cm and a weight of 410 to 450 g at the start of a match.

Write down every age group you coach, how many players are in each, and when each group trains.

3. Add spares on top

Allow for balls that go missing or wear out over time. Add a few spares to your total and keep them out of the everyday training bag, so a replacement is ready when one goes missing mid-session. Making one person responsible for counting balls out and back in helps keep the set complete.

4. Pumps, spare needles and a gauge

Plan for a pump in every kit bag and a small stock of spare needles, which are small and easy to lose. The same coaching website reminds coaches to make sure balls are pumped up.

Three habits help whoever looks after the balls:

Moisten or lubricate the needle before it goes into the valve. A UK retailer's inflation guide warns that a dry needle can damage the valve, and our football care guide covers the options.
Guide the needle in straight. The same guide says pushing it in at an angle risks harming the bladder inside.
Check pressure regularly with a gauge rather than relying on a squeeze; the same guide calls a gauge the most accurate way to check. Law 2 sets a match range of 0.6 to 1.1 atmosphere at sea level, and our FAQ says to inflate to the pressure marked on the ball and never over-inflate.

5. A carry bag and a dry place to store the set

A ball bag keeps the set together on the way to the ground and makes the end-of-session count quick. The same retailer guide favours a mesh sack, suggests keeping wet balls somewhere ventilated rather than in a sealed bag, and says nobody should stand or sit on a ball, because that bends it out of shape for good.

Our FAQ adds the finishing steps: after a wet or muddy session, wipe each ball and let it dry naturally, away from heaters and direct sun, then store the set part-inflated rather than flat. In a Pakistani summer, think shaded cupboard, not sunny windowsill.

6. Put a budget together line by line

Price each line separately: balls in each size, spares, pumps, needles, a gauge, carry bags and delivery. Decide which fixtures genuinely need match balls and which sessions can use training balls, and split the ball line into those two parts.

Prices change, so check current figures in our footballs collection rather than an old screenshot. If a principal, committee or sponsor must approve the spend, a written quote (step 8) gives them one clear number.

7. Delivery and payment within Pakistan

Delivery anywhere within Pakistan costs a flat Rs 250 per order, so placing the whole set as one order means paying it once. Cash on delivery is available on orders within Pakistan, so you can pay when the parcel is in your hands.

Read our shipping policy before you commit to a deadline. Delivery times are estimates and larger orders can take longer to prepare, so order well ahead of the new term or your first fixture. When the parcel arrives, open it and count the balls straight away.
